The Master of Engineering Science (Mechanical) provides you with the foundations that will underpin ongoing professional development, preparing you for further study or for a career in an engineering-related field or in areas where these skills and knowledge are required.
 

Mechanical engineering is concerned with the design, construction and operation of machinery. It applies the principles of physics, materials science and mathematics to designing, developing, researching, evaluating, manufacturing, installing, testing, operating, maintaining and managing mechanical systems.
 

As a discipline, mechanical engineering is applied in a variety of areas including mining, minerals processing, manufacturing, the oil and gas industry, the automotive, aviation and shipbuilding industries, electrical power generation and distribution, road and rail transport, defence, agriculture, fishing and food processing.

You will be provided with study in both the theoretical and practical aspects of engineering, and the course builds on your previous experience and knowledge.
 

The program includes eleven core topics including a design project and research project. Core topics provide you with the opportunity to gain knowledge in analysis of engineering systems, engineering physics and materials, engineering mathematics, mechanics and structures, engineering mechanics, engineering materials, and thermodynamics and energy systems.
 

Options topics cover areas such as fluid mechanics, dynamics, applied thermo-fluid dynamics, mechanics of machines, control systems, and solid mechanics.

Applicants must normally hold one of the following appropriate qualifications:

  • an engineering degree
  • a science degree
  • an Australian TAFE diploma or advanced diploma (AQF Level 5) qualification in an appropriate field plus seven years relevant work experience
  • an equivalent overseas qualification.
     

A knowledge of mathematics (equivalent to first year university mathematics), and science (equivalent to a university undergraduate topic in physics and other relevant sciences), is assumed.
 

International students must satisfy our English language proficiency requirements for admission. If your first language is not English you will need to have:
 

  • Achieved the required test score for the course you are applying for. The IELTS and equivalent scores to meet the various levels #. IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and Cambridge tests must be taken in a registered testing centre.; or
  • Successfully completed an approved secondary or tertiary qualification, taught in the English language in a country where English is the official language or the main language spoken (for up to an overall IELTS of 6.0) with evidence no more than five years old on the proposed date of commencement of the course; or
  • Successfully completed a pre-course English program from an approved ELICOS Provider*.
