About
Fairmount College, a Congregational institution served as the forerunner to Wichita State University (WSU) until 1895. The college was transformed into the Municipal University of Wichita in 1926 following a vote among the city's residents, making it the first municipal university located west of the Mississippi River. The university's current name was adopted in 1964. Later on, the Kansas Board of Regents signed a partnership agreement with the university. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the institution's sports governing body. The main campus is located in North Fairmount, perched atop a hill with a view of Wichita's city center. It includes administrative offices, academic buildings, common areas, gyms, and dorms for students. With more than 6,00,000 square feet of lab space, the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at WSU is the biggest university-based aviation research and development facility in the country.
