About
Washington and Lee University (W&L) is a private liberal arts university located in Lexington, Virginia. The university was founded in 1749 as Augusta Academy, and in 1796, it was renamed Liberty Hall Academy. In 1802, the school was renamed again to honour George Washington, and in 1870, it was named after Robert E. Lee, who served as president of the university after the Civil War. Today, the university is renowned for its rigorous academic programmes, strong sense of community and commitment to the liberal arts.
