About

The University of Toledo (UToledo or UT) is a public research university in Toledo, Ohio. As Toledo University of Arts and Trades, the institution was established in Toledo's city in 1872. After six years, it was closed down. It was reopened in 1884 as the Toledo Manual Training School after being taken over by the city of Toledo. Through the late 1800s, the vocational school expanded to become a university. On property provided by Toledoan Jesup W. Scott, the Toledo University of Arts and Trades was established in 1872 on the present Scott Park campus. From 1883 until 1967, when it started receiving governmental funding, it was a municipal university. When the institution partnered with Toledo Medical College and the Toledo YMCA College of Law in the first decade of the 20th century, pharmacy and law were added to the curriculum. With the establishment of the campus in west Toledo in 1928, the university saw significant development. The Medical University of Ohio was combined with the University of Toledo in 2006 and became the university’s Health Science Campus.

The university has selected three areas of research excellence where highly skilled academic members have received national recognition for their contributions to cell architecture and dynamics and solar energy, water quality, and sustainable technologies.
