Overview

About

The University of Rochester is a midsize private research university, located two miles south of downtown Rochester, New York. This non-sectarian research university, founded in 1850, serves over 11,000 graduate and undergraduate students. The institution has 158 buildings and around 2,000 faculty members. It takes pride in its personalised teaching technique and claims a student-teacher ratio of 10:1. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the New York State Board of Regents, the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc., and the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care have all granted it accreditation.

The institution is dispersed over four campuses, the largest one being the River campus, which is located along the Genesee River just south of downtown Rochester. The Eastman Quadrangle, which houses the Faculty of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering, is its focal point. The other campuses include the medical centre, the Eastman School of Music (which houses the huge Eastman Theatre performance hall and also serves the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra), and the South campus near Brighton. The William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration, the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the School of Arts and Sciences all offer graduate programs.

The Institute of Optics was launched in Rochester in 1929, becoming America's first educational program devoted only to optics. In addition, the Omega Laser Facility holds two of the world's greatest energy and intensity lasers. It has a budget of around $3 billion and an endowment of approximately $2.2 billion. It has almost 100,000 graduates and eight Nobel Prize winners among its alumni. Furthermore, the institution is one of the top ten largest employers in New York and provides the most jobs to the Greater Rochester area. One-fourth of the working scientists on the NASA advisory board throughout the development and research of the James Webb Space Telescope were university alumni and professors.

The University of Rochester's acceptance rate is 35.4%, which suggests that 35 students are chosen and admitted out of every 100 applications. A number of university faculty and graduates have received Nobel Prizes, Pulitzer Prizes, and Guggenheim Fellowships. The university's faculties are members of the National Academies of Engineering, Sciences, and Medicine.
