About
The public University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin also known as UWM or Milwaukee. Being a part of the University of Wisconsin System, it is the most prominent university in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. It is the second-largest university in Wisconsin and it is also one of the two public institutions that grant doctoral degrees. The university has 14 colleges and schools, including the only graduate school of freshwater science in the United States. It is the first dedicated public health school in Wisconsin to be accredited by CEPH, and the only school of architecture in the entire state.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was established on the premise that Milwaukee needed a top-notch public university to develop into a fantastic city. In order to establish a sizable public university with graduate programmes in Wisconsin's biggest city, the state legislature of Wisconsin passed a bill in 1955. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was founded in 1956 as a result of a merger between Wisconsin State College Milwaukee and the Milwaukee branch of the University of Wisconsin-Extension. With a university-wide focus on academic research, teaching, and community service, the university has grown to 12 schools and colleges and now offers 84 undergraduate programmes, and 48 graduate programmes, including 22 doctoral degree programmes. The university also had 1,604 faculty members on staff.

The university spent 68 million US dollars on research in 2015, placing it 179th out of all US research universities in terms of total research expenditure in 2010. The university's research and innovations are supported and commercialized by the UWM Research Foundation. It offers researchers and business organizations services in intellectual property management, technology transfer, corporate-sponsored research, and strategic corporate partnerships.
The 104-acre campus is in a residential neighbourhood on Milwaukee's upper East Side. The campus is located five blocks from Lake Michigan's shoreline and is less than a ten-minute drive from downtown Milwaukee. The Milwaukee County Transit System provides public bus transportation in Milwaukee to the campus. The campus is divided into four quadrants: central, north, west, and northwest. In addition to the main campus, the university has a number of other locations throughout the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The university has 15 NCAA division 1 teams that have won over 140 conference championships and made 64 NCAA tournament appearances.
