Overview

About

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is a comprehensive cancer center located in Houston, Texas which was established in 1941. It is a degree-granting educational establishment as well as a cancer treatment and research center situated in Houston's Texas Medical Center. It has ties to The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Monroe Dunaway Anderson, a banker and cotton dealer from Jackson, Tennessee, inspired the name of the cancer centre. He was in a business with his brother-in-law, Will Clayton. The company grew to become the nation's biggest cotton company. Anderson was concerned that if one of the partners died, the company would lose a significant quantity of cash to estate tax and be compelled to disband. Anderson established the MD Anderson Foundation to avert this.

The Cancer Center offers 12-degree programs in allied health services both at undergraduate and grduate levels. Some examples of these programs include:

  • Clinical programs: These are specialized programs that focus on the treatment of specific types of cancer, such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, or leukemia. Each program is led by a team of cancer experts who work together to provide the best possible care to patients.
  • Research programs: The center has a number of research programs that focus on different aspects of cancer, such as its causes, prevention, and treatment. These programs often involve collaborations with other researchers and institutions and may involve clinical trials that test new treatments.
  • Supportive care programs: These programs provide support to patients and their families during and after cancer treatment. They may include services such as nutrition counseling, physical therapy, and social work support.
  • Education and training programs: The center offers a number of educational and training programs for healthcare professionals, students, and the general public. These programs are designed to increase knowledge and understanding of cancer and its treatment.
