About

The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) is a graduate education and research institution located in Tullahoma, Tennessee, in the United States. It was established in 1964 as part of the University of Tennessee System, with a focus on research and education in the fields of space science and engineering. It was developed to give students access to the aerospace facilities at Arnold Air Force Base's Arnold Engineering Development Centre, which included wind tunnels and other laboratory equipment. Facilities

The university is located in Tullahoma, Tennessee, close to the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC). It is home to nearly 80,000 square feet of laboratories with world-class equipment and instruments. Some of these include: 

 

  • The CLA (Centre for Laser Applications) facility was founded in 1984 as a government-funded "Centre of Excellence" to provide unique advantages in laser-related research, education, and technology transfer. The CLA is housed in buildings 8184 and 8189 and has about 29,000 square feet of lab and office space. 

 

  • When John Schmisseur joined the UTSI faculty in the fall of 2014, he established the High-Speed Original Research and Innovation Zone (HORIZON). His goal is to provide students with leadership in aerospace and defence research. 

 

  • UTSI's Machine Shop, which opened in 1975, provides a wide range of machine shop services. The shop is 4,000 square feet in size and is located in the Research Lab section. A variety of machinery is available here ranging from Cincinnati mills to Bridgeport mills.

 

  • On campus, students are offered traditional-style dormitory housing. These rooms are adjacent to the beautiful Woods Reservoir, and the university offers them only on a first come first serve basis due to limited housing.
