The University of North Carolina, Wilmington (UNCW or UNC Wilmington) is a public research university located in Wilmington, North Carolina. It is a member of the University of North Carolina System. Wilmington College was established as a junior college on September 4, 1947, with a focus on serving the educational needs of World War II veterans. In 1963, the institution adopted a four-year liberal arts curriculum due to the legislation passed by the North Carolina General Assembly. Later, the college was renamed the University of North Carolina Wilmington in 1969 when it was elevated to the status of a university. It currently has three campuses with the main site in Wilmington, an extension campus in Jacksonville, and the Center for Marine Science close to Myrtle Grove.
