Overview

About

The University of Maryland or University System of Maryland, a state-run university system is made up of 11 coeducational campuses spread across eight cities. Charles Benedict Calvert founded the University of Maryland, College Park in 1856 as the Maryland Agricultural College. Maryland Agricultural College was transformed into a land-grant university in 1865 as a result of the Morrill Act of 1862. The school became racially integrated in 1950–1951, following a widely publicised legal battle, and women were first admitted in 1912. The uni was founded in 1920 as a result of the merger of the College Park and Baltimore campuses. It had five campuses in 1970. In 1988, a merger gave rise to the current 11-campus system. It has the status of a land-grant and sea-grant university and was renamed the University System of Maryland in 1997.

The Agricultural Experiment Station, the Center for Environmental Science, the Cooperative Extension Service, and the Maryland Biotechnology Institute, which oversees the Maryland Sea Grant College, are additional institutions in the state system that do research and provide public services. The College of Medicine of Maryland, the fifth med school in the United States, was established in 1807 and is now known as the University of Maryland, Baltimore. It has a fantastic library for the health sciences.
