About
The University of Florida is a public, co-ed university in Gainesville, Florida, in the United States. It is the oldest and biggest university in Florida. It belongs to the State University System of Florida and is an extensive research institution with land-grant accreditation. Its beginnings can be traced back to 1853 when the state-funded East Florida Seminary purchased the Kingsbury Academy in Ocala. The seminary relocated to Gainesville in the 1860s and ultimately merged with Florida Agricultural College, a land-grant university in Lake City. It changed its name to the University of Florida and moved back to Gainesville in 1905. The university mixed ethnically in 1958, and women were first accepted in 1947.
The university has 23 colleges and school systems, including the School of Teaching and Learning, Fisher School of Accounting, the Sr. School of Building Construction, the M.E. Rinker, the School of Forest Resources and Conservation, and the College of Health and Human Performance. It confers bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees. Additionally, there are specialized colleges for pharmacy, law, dentistry, medicine, and veterinary medicine. There are also over 100 undergraduate majors, 200 graduate programmes, an honours programme, and more than 100 undergraduate minors.
