Overview

About

The University of Minnesota, formerly known as the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (UMN, the U of M, or Minnesota), is a public land-grant research university in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota. The university is currently categorised as one of the "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity" institutions. With $1.04 billion spent on R&D in the fiscal year 2020, Minnesota, a member of the Association of American Universities, is rated 20th in research activity. The university was listed among Public Ivy universities in 2001, a group of publicly funded colleges and universities that are regarded to offer education of a calibre equivalent to that of the Ivy League.

A major city, or two, to be precise, is covered by the UMN. The Twin Cities, or Minneapolis and St. Paul, are regularly praised for their involvement in sports, cleanliness, and volunteerism. Although the university maintains campuses in each city, the Minneapolis location is regarded as the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities' primary campus. While first-year students are not required to live on campus, the majority (more than 80%) who do so can choose to do so in one of the regular residence halls or one of the more than two dozen living-learning communities, including the Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives House and La Casa De Espanol. Additionally, there are over 600 student organisations on campus, including over 30 fraternities and sororities.
