About
The University of Michigan (UMich or Michigan) is located in Ann Arbor. It is a Michigan-based public research university. It was founded in 1817 by an act of the former Michigan Territory as the Catholepistemiad, or the University of Michigania, twenty years before the territory became a state. It is Michigan's oldest university. In 1837, the college relocated to Ann Arbor on 40 acres of what is now recognized as Central Campus, a United States historic district. Since 1850, when the state's second constitution was officially ratified, the university has been controlled by an elected board of regents of the state. It has been a coeducational institution since 1871.

The university is home to the country's oldest continuously operating legal organization, the oldest worldwide professional dentistry fraternity, the country's oldest continuously operating university hospital, and the country's longest-running laboratory for multidisciplinary social science research. The university is a founding member of the Association of American Universities and one of the country's first research universities.
