Overview

About

The University of California Berkeley was established in 1868, driven by the State Constitution's goal of a university that would "contribute even more than California's gold to the glory and happiness of advancing generations." It is considered one of the most prominent state colleges in the United States. Berkeley's colours of blue and gold were chosen in 1873, with blue signifying not just the California sky and ocean, but also the Yale alumni who supported the foundation of the university, and gold representing the "Golden State" of California. The institution is located in the San Francisco Bay Area and has around 27,000 undergraduate and 10,000 postgraduate students.

It is a public research institution and one of the Association of American Universities' 14 founding members. The university provides a variety of degrees through institutions such as the Haas School of Business, College of Engineering, School of Law, and Graduate School of Education. Students seeking a Master's degree at the College of Engineering have the option of pursuing postgraduate degrees in eight disciplines.

The university's campuses are at the top of various college rankings lists due to their mix of academic quality, research prowess, and commitment to social mobility. UCB confers 40% of all undergraduate degrees in California and 70% of all PhD degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Many of those students contribute to the university's five daily discoveries and the research that helped launch 70 new California firms in 2014. Students from all UCB campuses volunteer in their communities and throughout the world. UCB has always been a key supplier of Peace Corps volunteers.
