Tufts University is a prominent medium-sized private university located in the Boston suburb of Medford, Massachusetts. Tufts College was founded in 1852 by Christian universalists who aspired to offer a nonsectarian school of higher learning. Until the 1970s, Tufts was a modest liberal arts institution in New England. It grew into a significant research institution with multiple doctoral programmes. Tufts is a member of the Association of American Institutions, a network of 64 North American research universities.
