Overview

About

Tufts University is a prominent medium-sized private university located in the Boston suburb of Medford, Massachusetts. Tufts College was founded in 1852 by Christian universalists who aspired to offer a nonsectarian school of higher learning. Until the 1970s, Tufts was a modest liberal arts institution in New England. It grew into a significant research institution with multiple doctoral programmes. It is classified as a 'Research I university,' indicating that it has the highest degree of research activity in the institution. Tufts is a member of the Association of American Institutions, a network of 64 North American research universities. The institution is well-known for its internationalism, study abroad programmes, and focus in all fields on active citizenship and public service.

The institution has campuses in Medford and Somerville, Massachusetts, with its main campus on Walnut Hill, about 8 kilometres from Boston. Tufts is a medium-sized university with more than 5,000 undergraduate students enrolled. The institution is known for its internationalism, which includes various study-abroad programmes. Furthermore, it emphasises public service and active participation across all fields. Tufts offers its undergraduates the resources of a large research institution and the attention of a liberal arts college, with a student-faculty ratio of 9:1 and an average class size of 20.

Tufts offers more than 90 undergraduate and 160 graduate programmes in 10 schools in Boston and Talloires, France. The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy is the United States' first graduate school of international relations. It has the biggest School of Arts and Sciences, which comprises the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences as well as the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, which is associated with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The School of Engineering, through the Gordon Institute, fosters entrepreneurship and retains close ties with the founding institution.

Tufts University has a global reputation for academic achievement and educating students to be leaders in a variety of fields. More than 98 per cent of students who enrol aim to continue their education after receiving a bachelor's degree. All of the university’s schools have a strong international component. To offer a strong international flavour to their field of study, almost half of all Tufts students take coursework outside of the United States. The institution stresses the value of study and research in the service of society, and civic engagement is incorporated into practically every element and activity at the university, led by the Tisch College of Civic Life.
