Syracuse University also known as "Cuse" or "SU," is a private research university located in Syracuse, New York. The university, which had Methodist Episcopal Church roots when it was founded in 1870, became nonsectarian in 1920. The sprawling campus, which is east and southeast of downtown Syracuse in the city's University Hill area, is characterised by a diverse range of architectural styles, from twentieth-century modern structures to nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival structures.
Few universities are as firmly connected with colour as Syracuse University. The Daily Orange, a student-run newspaper, and CitrusTV, a television studio, are two examples of the vibrant orange that is associated with campus life. Otto the Orange, the school mascot, supports the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference-playing Orange sports teams as they compete.
