About
Santa Clara University, situated in the heart of Silicon Valley, combines high-tech innovation with a social conscience rooted in the Jesuit educational tradition. John Nobili, S.J. established the university in 1851 as Santa Clara College, a boys' preparatory school. It began delivering college courses in 1853 and had over 275 students enrolled by 1875. Undergraduate and graduate studies at Santa Clara range from psychology to sustainable-energy engineering, and from theatre arts to business analytics. It was given its current name in 1985. Currently, the institution is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), and its varied programs are authorised by a number of notable organisations.
The institution is slightly selective with its admissions as Santa Clara University’s acceptance rate stands at 50.4%. Interestingly, the institution has been in the same location since its inception, therefore many of the campus buildings have a distinct feeling of history. Modern advancements, however, have been made. A new baseball field, a basketball arena, a new Art and Art History Building, and proposals for a new dorm are among the most recent additions. The institution, which has over 9,000 students, provides degrees through six colleges -
- School of Arts & Sciences
- School of Education & Counseling Psychology
- Leavey School of Business
- School of Engineering
- Jesuit School of Theology
- School of Law
Approximately 62% of undergraduates are from California, with the remainder coming from all across the United States and 44 countries. The University's average class size is 23 students, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1. The institution has an outstanding faculty team of over 500 experienced and trained academic members. Through its collaborations with a number of well-established educational institutions around the world, such as the Australian Catholic University in Australia, the University of Vienna in Austria, Universidad Alberto Hurtado in Chile, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi in India, it also provides opportunities for various student exchange and study abroad programs.
The university's sporting teams, known as the Santa Clara Broncos, participate in the NCAA Division I and engage in a long-standing rivalry with the University of San Francisco Dons, another nearby Jesuit college. Former students include Leon Panetta, former Director of the CIA and former Secretary of Defense, as well as Apple Inc CFO Peter Oppenheimer and former Seinfeld director Andy Ackerman.
