About
Rutgers University is a public research university in New Jersey, and the eighth-oldest college in the United States. It was founded on November 10th, 1766, and has since grown to become a large university with over 37,000 students with an estimated enrollment of 52,000 students, and more than 4,000 teaching and research faculty members. Rutgers offers undergraduate degrees in over 100 areas of study, master's degrees in 90 departments, and doctoral degrees through 10 schools.
The university was founded by the Royal Charter of King George III to train ministers for the Dutch Reformed Church. The school was initially named Queens College but was later renamed to honor Colonel Henry Rutgers, who donated $5 million to the university to build new facilities and fund scholarships for poor students.
