About
Providence College, located in Providence, Rhode Island, is a private Catholic university. The Dominican Order and the local diocese founded it in 1917, and it now offers 47 undergraduate majors and 17 graduate programmes. The college's incorporation was centred on Matthew Harkins, Bishop of Providence, who sought to establish a centre of advanced learning for Rhode Island's Catholic youth. Under inaugural president Dennis Albert Casey, O.P. (1917-1921), the college began with 71 students and nine Dominican faculty members at the corner of Eaton Street and River Avenue, with only one building, Harkins Hall.
The school had early success in basketball, football, and baseball with black and white team colours. The New England Association of Schools and Colleges granted the school regional accreditation in 1933. By 1935, the college had conferred its first Master of Arts, Doctor of Philosophy, and Master of Science degrees, as well as the first publication of the school's newspaper (The Cowl). Beginning with the 1971-1972 school year, the college decided to admit women in 1970. The first female administrator was hired that same year.
There are three main entrances to campus: Cunningham Square and Huxley Avenue to the upper campus, and Eaton Street in the southeast corner of the lower campus. Nineteen administrative and academic buildings, nine dormitories, five apartment complexes, three residences, four athletic buildings, a power plant, a physical plant, and a security office gatehouse make up the campus.
The college has 49 majors and 34 minors to choose from. The vast majority of students declare liberal arts or business majors. All undergraduate students, regardless of major, are required to complete a core curriculum that includes credits in the Development of Western Civilization, mathematics, philosophy, theology, natural science, English, fine arts, and social science. All undergraduate students must complete 16 credits in the Development of Western Civilization, which is a major component of the college's core curriculum. It enrolled 4,128 undergraduate students and 688 graduate students in the spring of 2021, for a total of 4,816 students.
Providence College alumni include a number of notable national and international politicians and judges. The Notable Alumni of the college are Actor and comedian John O'Hurley (Class of 1976), Former U.S. Representative Patrick J. Kennedy (Class of 1991), Biomedical researcher and discoverer of HIV Robert Gallo (Class of 1959), Popular Film director Peter Farrelly (Class of 1979), James O'Brien (Class of 1992), David Gere (Class of 1979) & Sports journalist Sean McAdam (Class of 1981).

Facilities
At Providence College, there’s a Dominican cemetery, a 25-meter swimming pool, a six-court tennis court complex, an artificial turf field, two quads, four athletic fields, and several parking lots. Students can choose from over 120 clubs and organisations at the college to participate in co-curricular activities. Sports fans can select from 25 club sports teams. Student Services: Academic advising is faculty-led, coordinated and supported by the Director of Academic Advising, and supplemented by academic departments and programmes. Collaboration and referral to the Center for Career Education, Office of Academic Services, Personal Counseling Center, Office of the Registrar, and Center for Global Education are also part of academic advising.
Library Services: All enrolled students are eligible to borrow from the Phillips Memorial Library. Students will need to bring appropriate identification to borrow items from the library. Students who have PC ID cards should bring them to the circulation desk.
Medical Services: All full-time undergraduate students are eligible for comprehensive and confidential physical and mental health services at the Student Health Center. The Student Health Center also offers relevant health and wellness programming, such as nutrition, physical activity, alcohol and other drug use, tobacco use, stress, and general wellness screenings.
Campus Life: Each programme is unique, and may include dorm living, shared apartments, or host families. You could be living with American university students, international students, or locals from the host country. When selecting a study abroad programme, consider your objectives for the experience. This will require you to consider the type of living situation with which you are most comfortable. If your primary goal is to improve your language skills, you might want to live with a host family. Sports Facilities: As part of a Dominican-inspired college, the college’s Department of Recreational Sports strives to help students realise their full potential as intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual beings. Such realisation is made possible by the department's intentional, safe, and well-managed intramural competitive sports programming, structured recreational events, physical fitness and conditioning activities, support for casual recreational use of fields and facilities, and administrative oversight of recognised sport clubs.
Students Clubs: Students can join over 100 active clubs and organisations that focus on social, multicultural, political, professional, educational, athletic, community service, and wellness issues. Participation in these organisations allows students to participate in activities that interest them, make a difference on campus and in the community, and form friendships that can last a lifetime.

Acceptance Rate
Providence College acceptance rate is 53% for international students in 2024. This number is moderately selective and the admission committe therefore is quite stringent in admitting. To gain admission, students must achieve out-performing grades and scores.
Getting into Providence College has been a bit more challenging this year compared to last year. Over the past decade, the college has accepted around 54.73% of applicants. However, for the class of 2023, the acceptance rate dipped slightly to 52.78%.
On the flip side, more accepted students decided to enroll at Providence this year. Typically, around 18.29% of accepted students choose to attend. But for the class of 2023, the yield rate went up to 19.68%, which is great news for the college.
Interestingly, the number of applications remained the same as the previous year. There was no increase or decrease in the applicant pool for Providence College's 2023 admission cycle.
