Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is a public research university located in Portland, Oregon. It is the only academic health center in the state and is known for its excellence in research and patient care. The university has a student population of 1321 students and 2491 faculty members with alumni comprising over 20,393 medical professionals.

 

OHSU was founded in 1887 as the University of Oregon Medical Department, and it has since grown to become a comprehensive health sciences university with a range of programs in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, and public health. The university is affiliated with several hospitals and clinics in the Portland area, including OHSU Hospital, which is a leading academic medical center.

 

In addition to its academic programs, OHSU also has a number of research centers and institutes focused on a range of health-related topics, including cancer, neuroscience, and genomics. OHSU comprises 3 schools: 

  • School of medicine 

The OHSU School of Medicine has a faculty of about 1,750 people and awards degrees such as Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Science, Master of Physician Assistant Studies, and Master of Public Health.

 

  • School of Dentistry 

In 1945, OHSU's School of Dentistry consolidated with the university. The school has departments in endodontics, orthodontics, pathology and radiology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, and pediatric dentistry, among many others, and is recognized by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. 

 

  • School of Nursing 

OHSU's School of Nursing offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral nursing programs.

Facilities

The main campus of the University, located on Marquam Hill (also known as "Pill Hill") in Homestead, is home to not only primarily students but also a number of health-related organizations. The Oregon Health & Science University Hospital is a Level I trauma center and general hospital, with approximately 250 beds for treating patients. To round out their formal education, students can play intramural sports that are co-ed and first come/first served.

 

Housing Facilities

OHSU has no housing facilities for students. The university has provided a set of links to help students with their accommodation search. OHSU housing posting and OHSU Chuckslist are two of the housing links affiliated with the university. They are a public link to OHSU-affiliated housing offers. The university also recommends other public sites such as Craigslist, Trulia, and Zillow. The university encourages students to live close to campus. Library Facilities

The library at the Biomedical Information Communication Centre (BICC) contains several collections, including the Struble Library. The holdings of the OHSU Libraries are divided into several different collections, distributed throughout the Main Library and Old Library. The library has an extensive database with 86,126 printed books and a number of electronic books 227,785 and a number of electronic and print journal titles is 32,162.

 

Dining Facilities

The OHSU Food and Nutrition Department has several locations where they serve students, faculty, and staff. The largest of these cafés is open 24 hours a day to accommodate the university's large population—Cafe on Third offers hot breakfasts in the morning and meals late into the night. Mac Hall Cafe offers gourmet cooking made from scratch every day. The HRC 9th Floor Café is a bustling little eatery on the University of Oregon's research center that specializes in serving delicious and hearty meals from around the world.

The university has made it mandatory for all students to make an application fee payment of 50 USD - 100 USD. Each applicant must provide the following:

Placements

In 1995, The OccHealthSci Summer Internship Program was initiated to provide undergraduate students with the opportunity to participate in biomedical and occupational health research at OHSU.  To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must be Oregon residents or attend an institution of higher education in Oregon and are working to earn their first baccalaureate degree. The university’s 3-month paid internship program begins in June and comes to an end mid-to-late August with interns presenting their work at a poster session. The university accepts around 100–145 applications for 11 to 15 internships each summer, accepting only those whose academic or professional backgrounds have been verified by the admissions committee (source)
