About

Ohlone College is a public community college with two campuses - one in Newark, New Jersey, and the other in Fremont, California. It is affiliated with the California Community College System. Ohlone provides over 100 occupational certificate programmes that train students for jobs and 61 associate degrees that can be transferred to universities or used to start employment. Ohlone College’s acceptance rate is 100%. It is a public community college with a total enrolment of 8,835 undergraduate students.

 

Located in the southeast part of the San Francisco Bay area, the college serves the cities of Fremont, Newark, and parts of Union City.  It was founded as a California Community College in 1965 due to voter support. The Ohlone Community College District consists of two campuses and one online school.

 

On June 18, 1967, the institution's name was officially changed to Ohlone College. Ohlone provides associate degrees in the Arts and Sciences (AA and AS) equivalent to two years of undergraduate education in several fields. In 1972, the Ohlone College Centre for Deaf Studies and Special Services was established, coinciding with the enrollment of 30 deaf and hard-of-hearing students. In a given year, the Centre for Deaf Studies had up to 200 Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

 

Ohlone College offers job training programmes that can be completed in less than the standard two-year period and require fewer than 60 units to earn a degree. The college has a strong alumni network, and among the notable alumni are Glenn Dishman - baseball pitcher and pitching coach; Brian Dunning - author; Tiffany Liou - journalist; and Gary Plummer - American footballer.
