About

Mississippi State University, officially known as the Mississippi State University for Agriculture and Applied Science, is a public research university adjacent to Starkville, Mississippi. The Morrill Act of 1862 established the land-grant institution, which was officially recognised as Mississippi Agricultural & Mechanical College in 1878 and received its first student class in 1880. The university covers approximately 4,200 acres and houses over 730 buildings. The university's grounds include pastures, farms, and woodlands. Apart from that, the university operates eight colleges. It has over 175 programmes for graduates, baccalaureates, and specialised degrees. It is Mississippi's only one that offers accredited programmes in veterinary medicine and architecture.

 

The university has the largest campus in the state by enrollment, with over 22,000 students from all over the country attending its core campus. Aside from these schools and colleges, the university maintains an off-campus centre in Meridian that offers graduate and undergraduate degree programmes. The College Of Engineering in Vicksburg, in collaboration with the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station, offers master's programmes in science to students. Beyond the core campus, there are numerous farms used for agricultural research. The university's intercollegiate athletics teams compete in NCAA Division I and are known as the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The university was a founding member of the SEC in 1932. Several competitions, including national championships, have been won by the university team. 

 

There are over 300 student clubs and organisations at the university. The prominent Maroon Band, Orientation Leaders, Arnold Air Society, the Black Student Alliance, MSU Road Runners, Alumni Delegates, Maroon VIP, Music Maker Productions, Lambda Sigma, the Engineering Student Council, the Stennis-Montgomery Association, the Baptist Student Union, many more are among the well-known groups. The university has 17 residence halls, including community-style and apartment-style housing for students. Cresswell Hall, Critz Hall, Herbert Hall, and Hull Hall are traditional-style residential halls that house both male and female students. At the University, there is the MAFES Plant Science Farm, which is used for agricultural research. It covers 560 acres and has ten greenhouses and 40 structures. The MAFES Animal Sciences Farm, which spans 1,650 acres and houses 52 buildings, is also part of the campus.

Facilities

The main campus of the university encompasses approximately 1,000 contiguous acres. Facilities Management (formerly Physical Plant) is in charge of all aspects of building maintenance and infrastructure on campus, as well as providing support services to approximately 6.5 million square feet of conditioned space.
