About
Louisiana State University (usually referred to as LSU) is a public land-grant research university located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College is its full name. The school was founded in 1860 not far from Pineville, Louisiana, under the name Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy. The current main campus's more than 250 buildings were constructed in 1926 in the Italian Renaissance style by architect Andrea Palladio. On a 650-acre plateau by the banks of the Mississippi River, the historic core of the main campus is situated. Louisiana's flagship institution and the pinnacle of the university system, the university is the most comprehensive in the state.
There are over 28,800 undergraduate and over 4,580 graduate students enrolled in its 14 schools and colleges. The Paul M. Hebert Law Center and the E. J. Ourso College of Business are two graduate institutions that have achieved national recognition for their specialized fields of study. According to the classification system, it falls under "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity." More than 800 sponsored research programs have been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at the university, which is also renowned for its massive research infrastructure. There are just eight colleges that offer programs nationwide.

LSU participates in the Southeastern Conference and the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) and fields teams in 21 varsity sports (9 men's and 12 women's). Baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field are among the sports in which the nine men's teams participate. The Library, located on the university's main quadrangle, is home to the university's major library collection, which contains approximately three million books.
