About
Liberty University is a private evangelical Christian institution in Lynchburg, Virginia. The university is infamously affiliated with the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia (Southern Baptist Convention). It was founded in 1971 by Jerry Falwell Sr. and Elmer L. Towns and is among the world's largest Christian universities and the largest private non-profit universities in the United States by total student enrollment. Most of its enrollment is in online courses, with about 15,000 students in its residential programme and 80,000 online in 2022.
LU boasted an extensive portfolio of over 550 total programmes, with 366 offered through traditional on-campus instruction and 289 accessible via online delivery. The university's graduate programme included 144 distinct programs, while four doctoral programs were available to students pursuing advanced degrees.
The university consists of 17 colleges, including a school of osteopathic medicine, a school of law, and a seminary. Liberty's athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are collectively known as the Liberty Flames, joining Conference USA as a full member in 2023
