The American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) published research on the requirements for the core curriculum at 715 four-year colleges in August 2010. The study compared institutions based on their dedication to the fundamental topics thought to be necessary for a competitive, well-rounded education. Only 16 institutions received an A rating, including Lamar. The Washington Post ran a piece on the findings with the slogan "Forget Harvard and think Lamar." Due to the rising enrollment, the institution said in October 2010 that entrance standards would be raised for the second time in two years.  The new enrollment requirements became effective in the fall of 2011.
