Overview
About
The Georgia Institute of Technology (also known as Georgia Tech) is a public research university and institute of technology located in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1885, the Georgia School of Technology was established to develop an industrial economy in the Southern United States following the American Civil War. It initially exclusively offered a mechanical engineering degree. In 1901, electrical, civil and chemical engineering were introduced, which are now part of its curriculum. The school's name was changed in 1948 to reflect its transformation from a trade school to a larger and more qualified research university and technical institute.
There are around 40,000 students from 50 states and 149 countries studying with about 14,000 employees working at Georgia Tech. It is a member of the University System of Georgia and has satellite campuses in Savannah, Georgia, Metz, France, Shenzhen, China and Singapore. With a focus on science and technology, the university is currently divided into 6 colleges and includes roughly 31 departments and groups. It is well known for its 300+ degree programs in various fields like business, engineering, math, arts, technology, and science.
AT&T, The Coca-Cola Company and The Bank of America’s corporate headquarters stand out among the campus' towers, although there aren't many buildings taller than four floors and there is a lot of greenery around the university. Due to this, it has a beautiful suburban feel that sets it apart from other Atlanta schools like Georgia State University. The campus is divided into four primary campuses: Technology Square, East Campus, Central Campus and West Campus. Student housing complexes are predominantly located on the East and West campuses, while teaching and research facilities are located on the Central Campus. There are also many off-campus accommodation options located close to the university for students to pick from
The university has remained in the national spotlight due to its highly competitive sports teams, the four-time football national champion Yellow Jackets and the internationally renowned fight song "Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech." 8 men's teams and 7 women's teams representing the university participate in NCAA Division I athletics and the Football Bowl Subdivision.
