About

Furman University is a private liberal arts university located in Greenville, South Carolina. It was established in 1826 and has a long history of academic excellence and commitment to the liberal arts. It is the oldest private school of higher learning in South Carolina. In 1992, it changed its name to a secular university while maintaining its motto, Christo et Doctrinae (For Christ and Learning). The South Carolina Baptist Convention founded Furman Academy and Theological Institution which was incorporated in Edgefield in December 1825. It held its initial classes with 10 pupils.

 

The University is not divided into four institutions which are:

  • The Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities 
  • The Richard W. Riley Institute 
  • The Institute for the Advancement of Community Health 
  • The Hill Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

 

The university offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programmes, with a focus on undergraduate education. The university has a sizable campus that is nearly 800 acres in size. The campus is in a beautiful position. It is so captivating that it also has a lovely lake inside the grounds.
