Overview
About
Located in Bronx, New York City, Fordham University (FU) is a private Jesuit research institution. FU which was founded in 1841 and is named after the Bronx area of the same name, is the third-oldest university in New York State and the oldest Catholic and Jesuit institution in the northeastern United States.
John Hughes, who was the coadjutor bishop of New York at the time, founded St. John's Institution. Shortly after, the college was given to the care of the Society of Jesus, and today it is a Jesuit-affiliated independent school governed by a lay board of trustees. John McCloskey, the college's first president, eventually became the country's first Catholic cardinal. Every president of FU between 1846 and July 2022-Tania Tetlow J.D. (Fordham's first layperson and the first woman to serve as president) has been a Jesuit priest, and Jesuit educational principles continue to influence the university's curriculum despite being run independently of the church since 1969. It is also the only Jesuit university in New York City.
Fordham University’s acceptance rate stands at 53.5% with approximately 16,980 students out of which 9,904 students are undergraduates, 2,879 are first-year students and 7,082 are graduate and professional students from more than 65 countries. The university also has field offices in South Africa and Spain, as well as a study-abroad facility in London. The institution grants degrees in more than 60 fields of study. It has ten constituent colleges, four of which are undergraduate and six of which are graduate, spread across 3 locations in southern New York State: the Rose Hill campus in the Bronx, the Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan's Upper West Side, and the Westchester campus in West Harrison, New York.
The Rams, the university's athletic team, include a football squad that won the Sugar Bowl, two Pro Football Hall of Famers, two All-Americans, two Canadian Football League All-Stars, and numerous NFL players. The Rams also took part in the first college football game which was aired in 1939 and the first college basketball game was aired in 1940. FU's baseball club fielded 56 players from the big leagues, participated in the first collegiate game ever played under current rules in 1859 and holds the record for most NCAA Division I baseball victories ever.
