Florida State University, one of the nation's best research institutions, maintains, grows, and disseminates knowledge in the sciences, technology, arts, humanities, and professions, all while adopting a learning philosophy deeply steeped in liberal arts and critical thinking traditions. It was founded in 1851 and is Florida's oldest continuous centre of higher education. The institution boasts 45,493 students from every county in Florida and from 130 countries. The institution has been recognised as the preeminent university in Florida, and the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education has recognized it as having very high research activity, the highest level awarded to a doctoral-granting university.
This institution is one of three state-designated premier institutions. It offers 106 bachelor's degree courses, 113 postgraduate courses, an advanced master's degree programme, 70 doctoral degree programmes, 14 specialised degree programmes, and 3 professional degree programmes. It comprises a range of graduate schools which include a College of Business, a College of Law, a College of Medicine, and a joint College of Engineering with Florida A&M University.
