About
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is a public, historically black university located in Tallahassee, Florida. It was founded in 1887 as the State Normal College for Colored Students and is the oldest public historically black university in the state of Florida. FAMU is a member of the Florida A&M University System and is the largest historically black university in the United States by enrollment.
Duval County educator Thomas Van Renssaler Gibbs was voted into office by the Florida legislature in 1884. Representative Gibbs' political career came to an abrupt end due to the re-emergence of apartheid, but he was productive in organizing the passage of House Bill 133 in 1884. This law created a white normal school in Gainesville and an African American school in Jacksonville. The bill was passed, and both institutions were established; however, the nation opted to move the African American school to Tallahassee. FAMU was established on October 3, 1887, following the passage of the bill. Classes began with 15 students and two (2) instructors. The first president was Thomas DeSaille Tucker (1887-1901), a Pensacola attorney. Mr. Tucker was decided to join on the faculty by former State Representative Gibbs.
FAMU offers a wide range of 98 undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of fields, including arts and sciences, education, business, engineering, law, and agriculture. The university is known for its strong programs in business, engineering, and education, and has a number of highly ranked programs in these areas. The FAMU campus is located in the scenic hills of Tallahassee, Florida. The university has a large campus that spans 422 acres. WIFI and camera surveillance are available throughout the campus.
