About

Eastern Kentucky Institution (EKU) is a public institution located in Richmond, Kentucky. It offers over 40 online undergraduate and graduate programmes. EKU has around 14,980 students enrolled in 100+ UG and PG degree programmes. It became a four-year university in 1922. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted the college its first accreditation in 1928. 

EKU added graduate studies in 1935. The state legislature granted the college the authority to give nonprofessional degrees in 1948. The University conferred its first Educational Leadership and Policy Studies doctorate in 2010. In addition to traditional on-campus courses, EKU supports its service region by providing adult degree completion choices and online degree programmes.

EKU was first known as "Eastern Kentucky State Normal School No. 1", and it has undergone name changes over the years. In 1922, it became "Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College," granting its first degrees in 1925 under that name. Later, in 1930, it was renamed "Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College," and in 1948, the word "Teachers" was removed from its name by the General Assembly. Finally, in 1966, the school was formally titled "Eastern Kentucky University."
