Overview

About

The College of Holy Cross is a private Jesuit liberal arts college in Worcester, Massachusetts. It is a four-year liberal arts college that was founded in 1843.  It is a Roman Catholic institution that was established in 1843 by a group of Jesuits, and it is still the only Jesuit college in the nation that only offers undergraduate liberal arts courses. According to Architectural Digest, it is one of the top 50 most beautiful college campuses in the country.  It was founded as a boys' school under the supervision of the Society of Jesus.

It is one of the few Catholic universities to have received a ranking among the top 50 liberal arts colleges in the US. The college previously only admitted men, but in 1972 it became a coeducational college. The institute is located less than 20 miles north of the state's borders with Connecticut and Rhode Island and about 40 miles east of Boston. The College of Holy Cross campus is known as "The Hill" because it is built into the side of Mount St. James. The campus provides a view of the city of Worcester. The educational complex at the college includes nine chaplains, a lacrosse stadium, a hockey rink, and a campus activity centre.

Although mass attendance is no longer required, religion still plays a significant part in college life. At CHC, there are roughly equal numbers of male and female students, as well as a substantial percentage of international students. It is a residential college, with 87% of students living on campus. Students live in the college’s 11 co-ed residence halls, which offer a variety of living options ranging from singles to suites. There are also study areas, community living rooms, and shared kitchens in each residence hall.

The New England Commission of Higher Education has granted the College of Holy Cross accreditation. There are 3,000 students enrolled and only 3% of the total student body at the college is made up of international applicants. The College of Holy Cross’s acceptance rate is 34.2% indicating that the college has a competitive admissions process. The most popular subjects at CHC are psychology and economics. Up to 30% of the student body has occasionally majored in either one or the other. Accounting, anthropology, chemistry, classics, philosophy, Russian, sociology, and Spanish are among the other programmes. The students conduct research that connects coursework with hands-on experiences in the laboratory and in the field, from compiling oral histories through local or global fieldwork to investigating the antiviral properties of proteins to digitising ancient manuscripts.

Since 1843, Holy Cross has sought to educate students who will live by the highest intellectual and ethical standards as leaders in business, professional, and civic life. In pursuit of this ideal, the institute strives to create an environment in which integrated learning is a shared responsibility, with activities taking place in the classroom and laboratory, studio and theatre, residence and chapel. Alumni include US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, a Nobel Prize-winning surgeon named Joseph Murray, and sportscaster Bill Simmons, who spent years working for ESPN and has produced a number of podcasts.
