The university is tucked in the quiet village of Buies Creek near the Cape Fear River in the Sandhills of southeastern North Carolina. The centre of the university is ‘Academic Circle’ faces Leslie Campbell Avenue to the south which is at the heart of campus. - The buildings north of Academic Circle border the recently established Fellowship Commons which is a network of brick walkways and meeting spots that link the campus from T.T. Lanier Street to Main Street.
- The north campus, which includes numerous residence halls, the Taylor Bott Rogers Fine Arts Centre, and the Lundy-Fetterman School of Commerce, is located outside Fellowship Commons.
- The university also has Jones Hall (for the university's honours college), Powell Hall, Pat Barker Hall, Strickland Hall, and Hedgepeth Hall are residence halls on the north campus. The new School of Osteopathic Medicine and the Physician Assistant Programme are housed in the 96,000-square-foot Leon Levine Hall of Medical Science, which is built across Highway 421.
