It was founded in 1887 as the Northern Branch State Normal School, and today it is part of the California State University system, which is the largest system of higher education in the United States. The three main areas of the university comprise the 119-acre main campus, the 800-acre Paul L. Byrne Memorial University Farm, and 2,330 acres of nature reserves. The campus offers residential and library facilities as explained below:
On-campus Residence - There are seven on-campus residence halls, therefore in all the institution can house 2,150 students or around 13% of the student body.
