About

California State University Channel Islands is a public university located in Camarillo, California, United States. It was founded in 2002 and happens to be the youngest in the CSU system of 23 campuses. CSUCI is situated on California's Central Coast, at the crossroads of the Oxnard Plain and the northern edge of the Santa Monica Mountains range. Channel Islands is where the university has a scientific research site on Santa Rosa Island which is one of the islands.

 

It is a relatively small Hispanic-serving university, with an enrollment of approximately 7,000 students (as of fall 2021). Despite its small size, the university offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programmes across multiple disciplines. There are 25 undergraduate programmes offered in areas like business, biology, anthropology, chemistry, maths, etc. 

 

The university is Ventura County's sole four-year state university, and it earned Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) designation in 2010. . The university obtained this distinction by exceeding the criteria of having at least 25% Hispanic students. The school was permitted to apply for funding and other financial support from the US Department of Education after achieving HSI designation. For HSI Initiatives, the institution got around $16.4 million in federal funding. As of the fall of 2017, the Hispanic/Latino student population was 50%.

CSUCI is ranked as the 28th-best in Regional Universities West by US News. It was also placed #12 among Top Public Schools by the same publication. Facilities

The university has a north quad which includes the Del Norte classroom building and Madera Hall which houses the teaching faculty of the university. There are also Solano Hall and the Grand and Petit salons. The Manzanita Hall features classrooms for the nursing programme and other various classes. The South quad includes several redeveloped buildings. The Belltower here has most of the campus classrooms and professor offices. Student Union - The Student union is 23,000-square-foot and features a large area for student activities and musical performances; a dining centre with a coffee house, pizzeria, sandwich deli, and salad bar; lounges for socialising; a game room, pool tables, and computer gaming systems. There are ASI offices for Student Government, Student Programming Board, The Nautical Yearbook, and the Channel Islands View (CI View). The Student Union also has a courtyard for outdoor meetings and events for the entire campus community. 

 

Library - Lord Norman Foster built the John Spoor Broome Library, which was dedicated after the campus's first significant benefactor, John "Jack" Spoor Broome. It houses 75,000 books, 180,000 electronic books, and 32,000 art images. It also compliments the campus sustainability plan by employing recyclable carpets, and natural lighting and connecting the new structure with the current buildings surrounding it.
