Bob Jones University (BJU) is a private, non-denominational Christian university located in Greenville, South Carolina, United States. The university was founded in 1927 by evangelist Bob Jones Sr. as a fundamentalist Christian liberal arts college. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools both accredit the university, which has roughly 3,155 students.

 

BJU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and offers undergraduate and graduate degree programmes in a variety of fields, including business, education, music, and religion. There are more than 60 undergraduate majors and 14 associate degree programmes. The university also has Bob Jones Academy, which enrols children from preschool to 12th grade, and is run by the university. The school's demographic mix is predominantly white (90.3%), with non-Black minorities accounting for the majority of other ethnicities. International students account for 0.5% of total enrollment.

Facilities

The university sits on 205 acres near Greenville's eastern municipal limits. During the 1947-48 school year, the college moved into its first 25 buildings. The university houses a number of other facilities such as a library and a museum/art gallery on campus as listed below. 

 

Museum - The university has a museum and art gallery called the Bob Jones University Museum & Gallery (BJUMG). The museum was founded in 1951 and has a collection of over 35,000 works of art from various periods and cultures. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, textiles, and decorative arts from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. One of the highlights of the museum's collection is a group of Old Master paintings from the 14th to the 19th century, including works by Botticelli, Titian, Rembrandt, and Rubens. The museum also has a large collection of Russian icons and Orthodox liturgical objects.

 

Library - Mack Library (named after John Sephus Mack) has over 300,000 books and a capacity for 1,200 people, in addition to a computer lab and a computer classroom. (A music library is an adjunct to the Gustafson Fine Arts Center.) The Special Collections of Mack Library house a 700-title American Hymnody Collection. The "Jerusalem Room" is a recreation of the area in Westminster Abbey where research on the King James Version of the Bible was done, and it houses a rare Bible collection.

 

BJU Press - The university also has a Press which publishes textbooks for students. The BJU Press originated from the Christian School Movement. The press publishes a comprehensive range of K-12 textbooks. These textbooks are used by over a million pre-college students globally, and the press has around 2,500 books in print. It also provides online, DVD, and hard drive distance learning courses.
