About
Alcorn State University is a historically black public land-grant institution situated close to Lorman, Mississippi. It is the first black land grant institution to be created in the US and it was formed in 1871. The university belongs to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund as a member institution. Mississippi's Reconstructionist legislature was founded on the premises of Oakland College where the university had closed down. This legislature was dominated by Republicans who supported the goal of teaching the previously enslaved.
Alcorn State University’s acceptance rate stands at 78% with about 3,700+ undergraduate students and 600+ graduate students. This makes the university Mississippi's fifth-largest university and the second-largest historically black college or university (HBCU). More than 50 different subjects of study are available through the university's seven schools. The Division I sports teams of Alcorn State are referred to as the Braves and the members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) are all teams that compete in various tournaments.
