Overview

About

The University of Roehampton, London, originally known as the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education, is a public university in the United Kingdom that is spread across three major locations in Roehampton, a neighbourhood in the London Borough of Wandsworth. Digby Stuart College, Froebel College, Southlands College, and Whitelands College are the four 18th-century founding schools from which the university can trace its origins. Student housing is centred on these colleges. Roehampton and the University of Surrey collaborated as the Federal University of Surrey between 2000 and 2004. It then became an autonomous university in 2004 and changed its name to its current name in 2011. The institution is a post-1992 institution. Roehampton is a part of Universities UK and the European University Association.

The traditions of the university's four constituent colleges, all of which were established in the 19th century as institutions for the training of women teachers, are the foundation of the institution. In order to fulfil the demand for educating underprivileged and poor children, all four institutions were established. The Roehampton Institute of Higher Education was established in 1976 as a result of the union of the four institutions. Kevin Keohane, a former professor of science education at Chelsea College of Science and Technology, served as the institution's first rector. Its official name is still Roehampton University. The final college, Whitelands, legally amalgamated with the university in 2012, unifying the management of all the colleges.
