Program Overview

An intensive, vocational route into the graphic design profession that can also provide a portfolio for further study at postgraduate level, or acquire visual communication skills for your current profession.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Design for Visual Communication is designed to build your design skills and support you to develop a strong vocational portfolio.

What to expect

  • You'll join an exciting learning community of staff, students and alumni from a diverse range of creative disciplines and cultures.
  • Through tutorials, set and self-initiated projects, workshops and group discussions, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the design process, enhancing your practice in design and visual communication.
  • You’ll explore practical areas such as visual language and grammar, typographic hierarchy, graphic representation, and identity and information visualisation, with opportunities to experiment in adjacent processes such as projection mapping, generative design and data visualisation.
  • You’ll develop a foundation in the principles of visual communication through research methods such as participatory design, ethnography and contextual research – critical thinking skills to help you to engage with complex problems and lead on challenging projects.
  • You’ll use new forms of practice and research to take part in collaborative and self-directed projects, developing a portfolio of work for future employers, collaborators and career development.
  • Both UAL and LCC’s Design School have made significant and meaningful commitments to positive change through the impact of design on environmental and social problems. We'll encourage you to challenge processes, materials and ideas that might cause harm, and to develop innovative new solutions to support social and environmental justice.
  • The course is comprised of tutored study, self-directed study, access to facilities and asynchronous online materials. Tutored synchronous study is generally 2 days a week. In addition, you’ll also be expected to attend lectures and work independently.
