At the School of Literature and Languages, we use innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to literature from the past to the present, and immersive, practical methods of language-learning.

Our BA (Hons) English Literature course focuses on understanding how literature works across historical periods, national boundaries, and global contexts, what it can teach us about the world we live in, and how it interacts with other subjects including visual culture, gender studies, history, politics and sociology.

Entry Requirement
A-level

Overall: BBC.

Required subjects: Grade B at English Language or English Literature.

Please note: A-level General Studies and A-level Critical Thinking are not accepted.

Applicants taking an A-level science subject with the Science Practical Endorsement are required to pass the practical element.

GCSE or equivalent: English Language at Grade C(4) and Mathematics at Grade C (4) (or equivalent).

IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each element.

Minimum standard in English and mathematics

If you are applying for an undergraduate course at Surrey, you must meet our minimum standards for English and mathematics.

English:
- Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / Standard XII , English 70% from CBSE or ISC exam boards
- Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) / Standard XII, English 80% from the majority of Indian state boards (excluding Andhra Pradesh/Telangana/U.P/Bihar/Gujrat/Punjab).
Mathematics:
- Standard XII, Mathematics Pass
- All India Secondary School Examination, C2
- Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination, 6.
