Program Overview

The Italian and English BA is for you if you want to explore Italian and English to degree level, with the course divided equally between both languages. You will have the chance to combine study of the Italian language and cultures alongside study of English literature and critical theory.

You can study Italian at either Beginners or Advanced level. If you have already taken an A-level in Italian you would start at Advanced level. If you have an A-level in another foreign language then you can begin studying Italian at Beginners level.

As part of the course, you will study abroad for a year, where you can live as a student, at one of several universities in Italy, or work as a teaching assistant with tutors on hand to help throughout the year. Alternatively, you can take up an approved work placement in an Italian-speaking country.

In addition, at the end of your first year, you will attend one of our fully funded special summer schools so that you can immerse yourself in the language and culture that you are studying.

Throughout the course you will develop your written skills in Italian through the production of small pieces of creative writing and a range of other activities, including online language learning and the use of materials taken from Italian TV and radio. Spoken Italian is taught in small groups, mostly by native speakers.

Course Content
Year 1

You will study:
- Either Italian Language (Advanced)
- Or Italian Language (Beginners) 1 and 2
You will also study these two modules:
- The Novel Around the World
- Introduction to Italian Studies
Then you will choose:
- Either Renaissance Drama: Shakespeare and his Contemporaries
- Or Feminist Fiction and Historical Fiction
Then you will choose one module from:
- Authors and Genres
- Italy Since 1945
At the end of Year 1, you will attend the Modern Languages Summer School.

Year 2

You will study:
- Either Italian Language (Post-Advanced)
- Or Italian Language (Post-Beginners)
You will also study these three modules:
- Love Wars: Gender, Writing and Society, 1660-1789 A
- Critical Perspectives 1
- Renaissance Literature B
Then you will choose two modules from:
- Italian Linguistics
- History of Italian Cinema
- Italian Society and Culture under Fascism

Year Abroad
The Year Abroad is a fundamental element of this course, during which time you will study or work in Italy. Alternatively, you can apply to spend a year working as a British Council language-teaching assistant or on some other work placement of your choice, subject to approval. It is even possible to split the year between study abroad and work placement, giving you the best of both worlds. However, it is possible, in exceptional cases, to complete this degree in three years, without a year abroad.

You will have the chance to perfect your spoken and written Italian and engage with new societies, whist all the time building your independence and becoming more employable. Entry Requirement
- A/AS-levels: ABB including English (Language, Literature or combined) and Italian. Two AS-levels may be considered in place of one A-level. General Studies is accepted
- EPQ with A-levels: BBB at A-level including English (Language, Literature or combined) and Italian + EPQ at grade B
- Access to HE Diploma: Pass Diploma with a minimum of 45 credits at level 3, 30 of which must be at Distinction. To include 12 credits at Distinction in English Level 3 Modules. Plus grade B at A-level (or equivalent) in Italian
- International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 30 points including 6 in Higher Level English and Italian
- BTEC Nationals: Pass Diploma with D*DD. Plus grade B at A-level English (Language, Literature or combined) and A-level (or equivalent) Italian
Selection Process
When considering your application, we will look for evidence that you will be able to fulfil the objectives of the course and achieve the standards required. We will take into account a range of factors including previous exam results.

Applicants are not normally interviewed. If you receive an offer you will be invited to visit the department.

English Language Requirements
IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. If you do not yet meet our requirements, our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help you to improve your English to the necessary standard.

Fees & Scholarships
UK Students

Starting in 2022
- £9,250 in your first year. Tuition fees are subject to government regulations and may change in future years
- Year Abroad: your fee will be £1,250 for that year
- Year in Industry: your fee will be 15% of the full-time tuition fee that applies in that year
If you are resident outside the UK and the Republic of Ireland, you will need to pay a deposit of £3,000 to secure your place. This will be subtracted from your total tuition fee.

International Students

Starting in 2022
- £17,500 per year
- Year Abroad: £4,375, which is 25% of the full-time tuition fee
- Year in Industry: £2,625, which is 15% of the full-time tuition fee
You will need to pay a deposit of £3,000 to secure your place. This will be subtracted from your total tuition fee.

From 2022 onwards, EU nationals will pay the International fee. If you are an EU national with settled or pre-settled status under the EU settlement scheme, you may qualify for the UK fee (subject to criteria).
