Program Overview

One of the world's ten most widely spoken languages, Portuguese is estimated to have around 234 million speakers. From Brazil to Mozambique, the many countries where it is spoken have fascinatingly rich and varied cultures.

Study at Edinburgh and you will have the opportunity to develop advanced spoken and written skills in Portuguese while gaining the broad cultural education valued by graduate employers.

In addition to intensive language training, you will be immersed in an extraordinary range of literature, film, music and arts from Europe, South America and Lusophone Africa, explored in its historical context.

Our programme offers a solid foundation for learners with varying amounts of experience of Portuguese, including those who are just starting out; many of our graduates started as complete beginners in the language. By the end of the programme, you will be able to demonstrate a range of linguistic skills and crucial intercultural competencies.

Entry Requirement
CBSE All India Senior School Certificate Examination (SSC), CISCE Indian School Certificate (ISC) Standard XII: overall 80% with three subjects at 75%.
Award of Certificate with five subjects at Class XII, with an overall average of 80% or above and minimum 80% in all required subjects (or 85% where we require a grade A at SQA Higher). Grade XII CBSE Applied Mathematics is not accepted to meet a Mathematics subject requirement.

Advanced entry direct into Year 2 of many of our Science and Engineering degree programmes is possible for applicants who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement in the Higher Secondary School Certificate, but only where awarded by CBSE or CISCE. Advanced entry is offered into Year 2 to students from India with the relevant Indian boards. For advanced entry applicants must achieve the award of Certificate with minimum of five subjects at Class XII, with an overall average of 85% or above and minimum 85% in all required subjects as stated in our prospectus.
