Mathematical Physics MSc

You will take two compulsory courses plus a selection of courses that will bring you to an advanced level in subjects such as general relativity, cosmology, statistical physics, condensed matter physics, quantum field theory and the standard model of particle physics. You may also take courses drawn from a wider pool including specialist courses in mathematics, computing and climate science. For the MSc in Mathematical Physics, mathematics courses can account for almost half of the taught course element.

Students must follow 120 credits of Taught courses. At least 90 credits of these must be at SCQF Level 11 and at most 30 credits at SCQF Level 10. Of these, there must be:

• 30 credits of Compulsory Courses;
• At least 40 credits of Standard Courses;
• At least 20 credits of Mathematical Courses;
• Up to 20 credits chosen freely from the lists below.
• In addition, there is a 60-credit dissertation.
   

A UK 2:1 honours degree, or international equivalent, in physics or mathematics (with sufficient theoretical-physics content).
 

We are looking for significant knowledge of the following physics topics at advanced or intermediate undergraduate level:

• Classical/Lagrangian Dynamics
• Electromagnetism
• Quantum Mechanics
• Special Relativity
• Statistical/Thermal physics
   

Similarly, we would like all of the following topics in mathematics:

• Vector calculus
• Fourier Analysis
• Tensors
• Complex Analysis
   

English language requirements

You must demonstrate a level of English language competency at a level that will enable you to succeed in your studies, regardless of your nationality or country of residence.
 

English language tests

We accept the following English language qualifications at the grades specified*:

• IELTS Academic: total 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component.
• TOEFL-iBT (including Home Edition): total 92 with at least 20 in each component. We do not accept TOEFL MyBest Score to meet our English language requirements.
• C1 Advanced (CAE) / C2 Proficiency (CPE): total 176 with at least 169 in each component.
• Trinity ISE: ISE II with distinctions in all four components.
• PTE Academic: total 62 with at least 59 in each component.
• Your English language qualification must be no more than three and a half years old from the start date of the programme you are applying to study, unless you are using IELTS, TOEFL, Trinity ISE or PTE, in which case it must be no more than two years old.
