Program Overview

The Korean peninsula lies at the centre of landmark geopolitical developments in the early 21st century.

North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme and tensions between the two Koreas serve as stark reminders of the fragility of regional and global orders.

South Korea has become a major global economic player and an important actor in development assistance.

Additionally, Korean culture (including pop culture) has surged to global popularity over the past decade and exported across the globe.

Understanding Korean culture, history, current political and economic developments and international relations is therefore crucial to make sense of key processes in global security, economics and politics in Asia and beyond.

Course Content
Semester 1
Core: Research skills and methods for Asian Studies 1 Core: Korean Politics and International Relations

Electives to be chosen from may include:
- Political Economy of Korea’s Development: Globalisation and Inequality
- Unwritten Korea: Understanding Korean society and culture through contemporary arts and films
- Korean Language Beginner 1
Semester 2
Core: Research skills and methods for Asian Studies 2

Electives to be chosen from may include:
- Korean History, Culture and Society
- Global Cities: Seoul in Comparative Perspective
- Korean Language Beginner 2 (if Korean Language Beginner 1 was taken in Semester 1)
Entry Requirement
CBSE All India Senior School Certificate Examination (SSC), CISCE Indian School Certificate (ISC) Standard XII: overall 80% with three subjects at 75%.
Award of Certificate with five subjects at Class XII, with an overall average of 80% or above and minimum 80% in all required subjects (or 85% where we require a grade A at SQA Higher). Grade XII CBSE Applied Mathematics is not accepted to meet a Mathematics subject requirement.

Advanced entry direct into Year 2 of many of our Science and Engineering degree programmes is possible for applicants who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement in the Higher Secondary School Certificate, but only where awarded by CBSE or CISCE. Advanced entry is offered into Year 2 to students from India with the relevant Indian boards. For advanced entry applicants must achieve the award of Certificate with minimum of five subjects at Class XII, with an overall average of 85% or above and minimum 85% in all required subjects as stated in our prospectus.
