Our highly regarded Architectural Conservation programme is more than 40 years old; it is the longest-established graduate historic preservation programme in Scotland or its neighbouring nations.

Whether you are approaching the field from an architectural, historical, geological or other viewpoint, this programme will guide you through the foundations and challenges of this important means of nurturing cultural and national identity.

You will benefit from learning in a World Heritage city, and from the wealth of academic and intellectual activities associated with an internationally-renowned university.

You will be part of the Scottish Centre for Conservation Studies (SCCS), a specialist teaching and research unit that provides the depth of expertise and resources that ensures this programme is recognised by the Institute of Historic Building Conservation.

Volunteering opportunities are normally also available through our partnerships with relevant organisations, allowing you to flex your skills in a practical setting.

Course Content
The programme is assessed through:

Since the onset of the Covid pandemic in 2020, the programme has been comprehensively restructured to allow for hybrid learning, combining online lectures and course reading with in-person teaching in smaller groups.

Subject to any remaining social distancing restrictions, field trips within Scotland and England (and possibly overseas) will give you the chance to explore conservation issues in other settings.

Following the taught courses, you will research and write a dissertation of around 14,000–15,000 words on an aspect of architectural conservation.
Entry Requirement
CBSE All India Senior School Certificate Examination (SSC), CISCE Indian School Certificate (ISC) Standard XII: overall 80% with three subjects at 75%.
Award of Certificate with five subjects at Class XII, with an overall average of 80% or above and minimum 80% in all required subjects (or 85% where we require a grade A at SQA Higher). Grade XII CBSE Applied Mathematics is not accepted to meet a Mathematics subject requirement.

Advanced entry direct into Year 2 of many of our Science and Engineering degree programmes is possible for applicants who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement in the Higher Secondary School Certificate, but only where awarded by CBSE or CISCE. Advanced entry is offered into Year 2 to students from India with the relevant Indian boards. For advanced entry applicants must achieve the award of Certificate with minimum of five subjects at Class XII, with an overall average of 85% or above and minimum 85% in all required subjects as stated in our prospectus.
