MSc Digital Health

The MSc provides you with the necessary interdisciplinary skills needed to become a leader in the field of Digital Health.

If you are entering with a degree in Computer Science or Engineering, you will take a bespoke unit in the Foundations of Health and Wellbeing looking at a ‘cradle to grave’ view of the illnesses that affect the population at all stages of life. 

If you have a degree in Health Sciences or Life Sciences, you will complete an Introductory Programming unit using the Python programming language and a data analytics and modelling in health unit.  

You will then have the opportunity to work together in groups in a Case Study unit, which is a problem-based approach to draw together learning from the other units. 

The programme also includes other core modules taken by both health and engineering specialists: 
 

•  An Introduction to Artificial Intelligence 
•  Responsible Innovation in Digital Health 
•  An Introduction to Epidemiology and Statistics 
•  Sensing Technology for Diagnostics and Monitoring 
•  People and Systems in Healthcare. 
   

Finally, you will undertake the MSc’s unique Digital Health project, which is closely modelled on the process of product development, including market analysis, analysing data, co-design with a real patient group, designing a clinical trial of your product and understanding the regulations it has to meet before it can be sold. This project has been designed with industry partners, ranging from corporates to SME’s, with the intention to prepare students for careers in industry, the healthcare sector and academia.  

To be considered for admission to a master's degree programme at the University of Bristol, the minimum requirement for entry is an undergraduate (bachelor’s) degree that is equivalent to a UK upper second-class degree (also known as a 2:1).
 

• We understand that the majority of candidates from India have been taught in English throughout their education. Many departments will accept CBSE or CISCE English at 80% or above in lieu of another English test, with an MOI letter confirming that English is the teaching language of your institution.
• The majority of our master’s programmes require a first class degree (60% or higher) from a recognised Indian university, with specific grades depending on the institution. Competitive programmes may require first class with distinction. If you would like advice relating to your specific qualification, 
• We are aware that at many of India's elite higher education colleges it is very rare to be awarded a first class. For this reason, a number of our departments may be willing to consider candidates from top colleges who have achieved 55% or above.
• Applicants wishing to be considered for research study at Bristol should have a first class pass in their Indian bachelor’s degree and some research experience. It may also be advantageous to have completed a master’s degree with research elements.
   

Applicants must hold/achieve a minimum of an upper-second class honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant discipline. This can be either a STEM-related discipline (eg computer science, engineering) or a health-related discipline (e.g. life sciences, medicine, health sciences, psychology, neuroscience, nursing or an allied health profession).

The 2020/21 pandemic has accelerated the trend to digitisation of healthcare. Not only do we need technologies for the management of long-term conditions, but we need technologies that can do that without bringing patients into clinical facilities and hospitals. Many health providers are now rapidly moving on-line, looking for resilience to future pandemics and to prioritise face to face health care for situations in which it is necessary.

Many exciting career opportunities to develop new digitally enabled, personalised, health solutions exist within academia, the charitable sector, and health providers in many different countries (e.g. the UK’s NHS), as well as myriad companies that have active health research and development programs (Apple, Google, Amazon, Sony, Microsoft, Samsung, Huawei, Arm, amongst others).
