About

The University of Brighton is a public university with four campuses in Brighton and Eastbourne on England's south coast. Its roots in history can be found since 1858 which is the same year the Royal Pavilion's Brighton School of Art was inaugurated. Then in 1992, it was given university status. The university places a strong emphasis on professional education, and the majority of degrees granted are also recognised by top institutions or lead to professional certifications. Pharmacy, engineering, ecology, computers, maths, buildings, geology, nursing, teaching, sport science, journalism, criminology, and business are among the popular subjects offered by the university. 

 

Since its establishment as an art school in the Royal Pavilion's kitchens in 1859, the university has grown to become the varied and welcoming institution it is today. At the four campuses in Brighton and Eastbourne,  

The University's Community Partnership Programme was highly praised in the Social Responsibility category at the 2009 Green Gown Awards and received an honourable mention at the 2010 Community-Campus Partnerships for Health awards. In addition to receiving the first institutional bronze medal in 2013, the university also joined the Athena Swan Charter in 2012 and was reaccredited in 2016. The university received its silver institutional Athena Swan award in 2021, recognising the university’s efforts to promote gender equality throughout the institution. 

 

Brighton is also a signatory to the Race Equality Charter, and in 2019 it received the Bronze institutional Race Equality Charter award, confirming its dedication to enhancing the presence, advancement, and success of employees and students of minority ethnicities at the university. Brighton has reaffirmed their commitment to equality for LGBTQ+ staff and students by becoming a proud Stonewall Diversity Champion, a programme that supports and promotes fair practices in relation to the employment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender personnel. In order to embody and advance equality of opportunity, the university is dedicated to creating a just environment. Ranking

According to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, 79% of the university’s research output is of a high calibre on a global scale. According to the top three grades, 15% of the research conducted at the university is "world-leading" which is the highest grade, followed by "internationally good," the second-highest grade, and "internationally recognised," the third-highest grade. 

 

The university was referred to as one of the "rising stars" in the UK because of its RAE ranking, which increased from 80th in 2001 to 59th in 2008. 65% of the art and design-related research at the Faculty of Arts was deemed to be "world-leading" or "internationally excellent." In terms of the quantity and calibre of the study, Research Fortnight ranked the submission 2nd, putting Brighton among the top art and design research hubs in the nation. The Research Fortnight newsletter also names Brighton as one of the top modern institutions in terms of the calibre of its research. According to Times Higher Education's (THE) PG Engineering and Technology ranking for 2021, Brighton is positioned between 300th and 400th. The Complete University Guide placed Brighton below the top 100 programmes in its UK rankings for civil engineering, electrical & electronic engineering, and mechanical engineering. This shows how well the university has done in regard to important factors like admission requirements and graduate prospects. In addition, Brighton was named by The Guardian among the top 100 universities in the UK for civil engineering, electronic & electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering. Facilities

The university's arts and humanities departments are housed on the City campus, which is situated in the centre of Brighton. A state-of-the-art design archive and studio space are also available on the city campus to foster a creative environment and enhance learning for students.
