Program Overview

Develop in-depth knowledge and skills of research methods. Prepare yourself for an academic or professional career with a focus on security and human rights.

You'll become familiar with the key concepts and theories that underpin an interdisciplinary understanding of security, conflict and human rights, and will be able to use your knowledge to inform research and analysis in these areas.

You will also learn about contemporary problems and how they emerge at sub-national, national and supra-national levels, and how these levels are linked.

By the end of the course you should be able to respond to the demands of carrying out research in international contexts and among sensitive or vulnerable stakeholders caught up in specific conflict situations.

Compulsory course units

Semester 1
- Advanced interdisciplinary research design (collaboratively delivered unit)
- Research apprenticeship project (MRes)
- Quantitative methods 1: introduction to quantitative methods
- Qualitative methods 1
- Principles and skills of social research
- Conceptual issues in security, conflict and justice and human rights (collaboratively delivered unit)
Semester 2
- Advanced interdisciplinary research design (collaboratively delivered unit)
- Research apprenticeship project (MRes)

- Independent research essay
Plus one unit from:
- Organised crime in Europe: threats and challenges
- International organisations in world politics

Entry Requirement
Typically, you should have a Bachelor degree with a final overall result of at least First Class. However, due to the number of different grading scales in use, we ask that you upload a copy of the grading scale used by your institution, along with your transcript, when you submit your application.

To apply for this course you should have an undergraduate degree in history, geography, anthropology, sociology, development studies or human rights.

We may make an offer based on a lower grade if you can provide evidence of your suitability for the degree.

If you have graduated within the last 5 years from an Indian university where the medium of instruction is English and have achieved the required level of English in your Indian 12th Standard examinations, we may be able to assess your English. More information can be found here.

English language requirements
- IELTS: 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in all components
- The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): 62 with no less than 59 in any element
- TOEFL IBT: 90 overall with a minimum 21 in all 4 components
You will need to get your English language qualification within 24 months prior to starting your course.
