This public research university is part of the well-established Russell Group of universities. The university came to fruition in the year 1824 as the Mechanics' Institute, a place for workers to get educated on the basics of science. Over the years, a lot of changes and a merger with another university took place, which finally led to the culmination of the present University of Manchester.
