Program Overview

As a qualified SLT you may be involved with the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of speech, language, and communication disorders across the lifespan and/or eating and drinking difficulties. You will work with paediatric and adult clients, parents, carers, professionals, and support workers in a range of different environments.

 

On the course, you will explore areas including psychology, linguistics and phonetics, anatomy, physiology and speech and language therapy practice frameworks. You will also consider the biopsychosocial and cultural needs of the client.

 

Our SLT degree will prepare you to meet the academic and clinical standards required for registration as a speech and language therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and for membership, as a newly qualified practitioner (NQP) with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

 

This course is run in collaboration with Canterbury Christ Church University.

Year 1


Students are required to study the following compulsory modules.

  • Foundations for Practice: Academic & Professional Development (20 credits)
  • Professional Knowledge and Skills 1: Development across the Lifespan (20 credits)
  • Professional Knowledge and Skills 2: Communication and swallowing difficulties across the lifespan (20 credits)
  • Professional Practice Module 1 (20 credits)
  • Holistic and Partnership Working 1 (20 credits)
  • Core Phonetics and Linguistics (20 credits)


Year 2


Students are required to study the following compulsory modules.

  • Holistic and Partnership Working 2 (20 credits)
  • Clinical Process 1: Assessment (20 credits)
  • Clinical Process 2: Intervention (20 credits)
  • Research Approaches in Speech and Language Therapy (20 credits)
  • Professional Practice Module 2 (20 credits)
  • Applied Phonetics and Linguistics (20 credits)


Year 3


Students are required to study the following compulsory modules.

  • Integrated Clinical Reasoning (20 credits)
  • Professional Practice Module 3 (40 credits)
  • Speech and Language Therapy Dissertation (40 credits)
  • Emergent Practitioner Skills (20 credits)
     

112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels, or equivalent. GCSEs in English Language 4/C, Maths 4/C and Science 4/C.

 

PLUS a commitment to helping children and adults who have difficulties with communication or with eating, drinking and swallowing.

 

Applicants who do not have English as their first language must have an IELTS score of 8.0 or above with no score less than 7.5 or an equivalent rating.

Resources: you may need to purchase books for your studies, as well as specific computer software (estimate, £150 per year)
Memberships: applying for student membership of a Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists may incur further costs
Placement travel: if you are receive tuition fee and maintenance support from the Student Loans Company, you are entitled to claim travel and accommodation expenses that exceed your daily travel cost to university. 

What sort of careers do graduates pursue?
At the end of the course, you may pursue a clinical career as a speech and language therapist in a variety of settings including education, health or the private sector.

 

You will usually work as part of a team, collaborating and communicating with other professionals, agencies and individuals sharing in the aim of meeting the health, educational and social needs of your client.

 

You may also decide to build on your research skills and complete a postgraduate research programme.
